Cuba: Visitors Shine in Capablanca Chess Tournament

21 de mayo de 2011, 12:16Havana, May 21 (Prensa Latina) People have praised the high level of the Elite Group in the 46th Capablanca Memorial Chess Tournament now underway here, but the Premier Group also been exciting, with one round to go and a a tie between Grand Masters Mark Bluvshtein (Canada) and Emilio Cordova (Peru), Granma newspaper reported Saturday.

The visitors were leading the Premier Group and have been a sensation despite their youth (23 and 20, respectively) and what many consider a lack of experiences needed to unseat veterans such as Yuniesky Quesada and Omar Almeida (Cuba).

Mark Bluvshtein was born in Russia, is 23 years old and has been a Grand Master since he was 16. He has won four out of eight matches and classified in the World Cup of Khanty-Mansiysk

Bluvshtein frequently uses the Nimzo-Indian Defense with white pieces and the Sicilian Opening with black pieces, which he may use in his Saturday match against Cuban GM Fidel Corrales.

Cordova, 20, will face International Master Isan Ortiz, and his match and that of Bluvshtein will define the Premier group winner.

Russian GM Vassily Ivanchuk once again beat Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon in the Elite Group and reached 5.5 points, but Vietnamese GM Le Quang Liem beat Czech David Navara and took the lead, with 6.5 points.

Saturday, Ivanchuck was set to play Le Quang Liem, the top chess player in Vietnam; Leiner faces Bruzon, and Andreikin competes against Navara.

Ivanchuk won the 2010 Capablanca Memorial, and previously won in 2005, 2006 and 2007. It is the oldest chess tournament in Latin America, first held in 1962.
