2011.05.17 - 10:30:35 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Documentary on Cuban New Song Movement Screened at Cubadisco 2011.SANTIAGO DE CUBA.-  The first scenes of the documentary “Trova de Oro”, on the history of the Cuban New Song Movement, had its premiere in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, as part of the program of activities of the Cubadisco 2011 Music Festival.

The Casa de la Trova of Santiago was the chosen spot for screening some of the interviews filmed almost seven years ago during the a visit of U.S. producer Cynthia Biestek.

The director of “Trova de Oro”, Ruben Gomez Neyra, told ACN that the purpose of the documentary is to pay tribute to several important figures of the Cuban New Song Movement in the province.

Gomez explained that at the moment of the shooting, many of these personalities were very old, and it was impossible to let them die without having recorded their memories and images.

The documentary comprises statements by three of the biggest representatives of this movement in the province: Ñico Saquito Jr., Calixto Cardona, and Roberto Napoles; the three of them passed away before the film was ready.

He noted that the documentary also includes valuable testimonies by other important figures of Cuban music like Omara Portuondo, Lino Beatancourt, and Eliades Ochoa.

Gomez affirmed that he is confident that this documentary will serve as a source of information for its content; and the high amount of notes, images, and statements, many of which were the last ones made by those personalities.

“Trova de Oro”, by the independent film production company PositivationFilms, with nearly 1 hour and 20 minutes, will be finished by the end of the year so as to be presented in the upcoming Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana next December. (ACN)
