ACC president Ismael Clark Arxer presented Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo with the diploma and a medal commemorating the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the ACC during a ceremony held on Monday at the Havana-based Center of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering with the presence of personalities from 14 countries.

They will all participate in a meeting of the Executive Bureau of the International Council for Science (ICSU) that begins on Tuesday at the San Geronimo University College of Havana to analyze the preparations for upcoming ICSU General Assembly and the election of its Board of Directors.

“It is a great honor to receive this recognition from the Cuban academy, which works with a lot of generosity in favor of its people and humanity,” the Vatican official told ACN.

Sanchez Sorondo traveled to Havana for the first time in 2004 and he is now in the Cuban capital to participate in the activities to mark the 150th anniversary of the foundation of the ACC.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1942, Sanchez Sorondo was appointed chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences by Pope John Paul II in November 1998.(ACN)
