Camagüey City,- For the first time a cook from Camagüey, Jorge Saavedra Nieves, who works at Dinos Pizza restaurant, was invited to participate at the Young Cook Contest, an event that started last May 12 in Havana, hosted by the National Federation of Cuban Culinary Associations.

The main goal of the competition is to improve the quality of dishes and to promote the exchange of experiences among the participants. Contestants from Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila and Camagüey provinces took part at the regional event sponsored by Camagüey due to its good results attained by the local association in 2010.

An original system known as “black box”, determines that no competitor is able to have access to the ingredients he is going to work with until the very moment of his performance. Such a practice stimulates a quick response regarding creativeness and initiative.

In this occasion, cooks had to use pineapple and poultry. Noelvi García Hernández, from Cienfuegos, was the winner and Saavedra won the second place, which granted both their ticket to Havana´s competition.

Artistic Cooking

Many lectures dealing with Cuban cuisine were presented as part of the event. The winner of the night was MSc Isa Annia Arredondo Agüero, who works at Camilo Cienfuegos Military School. Her work Rescuing Traditions also went to Havana as part of Camagüey´s crew.

The people who attended the regional encounter appreciated an exposition of dishes elaborated by local specialists on artistic cuisine and bakery.
