2011.05.11 - 16:06:09 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu.HAVANA, Cuba. - A special program of activities is scheduled in Cuba to mark the upcoming World Day of Environment on June 5 while the island is taking important steps in favor of environmental preservation.

Mario Abo Balanza, director of the Environmental Information, Management and Education Center, said the program opens with the 16th Children’s Science Forum to take place at the National Aquarium.

Activities include workshops, scientific events, lectures, debates and a round table about the World Day of Environment.

Likewise, the 8th International Convention on Environment and Development will be held at Havana’s Convention Center from June 4 to 8.

Abo Balanza said the national central meeting to mark the date will take place in Camagüey, 505 Km east Havana in recognition of actions taken in that city in favor of the environment; this is the second time the city hosts the meeting, previously held there in 1999.

As a result of environmental efforts, contaminating organic matters were reduced by 115 tons in Camaguey, while chemical products and ozone depleting substances were decreased by 2%. (ACN)
