2011.05.10 - 18:16:49 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.- Cuban plastic artists Miguel Angel Botalin and Alberto Lescay received the Cubadisco 2011 Honor Award in Santiago de Cuba, the city to which the Festival is dedicated this year and also venue of the event.

In the first official activity of the Cubadisco Festival, the most important contest of the Cuban recording industry, the two artists –confessed music lovers– were acknowledged for their contributions to the national identity particularly to music albums as a comprehensive cultural product, through their designs.

Botalin (Santiago de Cuba, 1932) is known as a professor and a promoter of the Cuban culture. His pieces of art frequently portrait the winding appearance of the city of Santiago de Cuba, the second most important one of the country, and it has appeared in phonogram’s design, such as the recent anthology Veneración of Santiago’s music.

Likewise, Lescay has become a sort of messiah, a promoted of traditions and the pride of the mixed-race heritage of the Cubans, especially in Santiago de Cuba. His most recent work of art –a sculpture dedicated to tres players and the tres guitar– was unveiled this week in honor of its mark in the musical identity of the country. The winners of the Cubadisco Festival will receive a replica of the sculpture.

Around 20 institutions and personalities of Santiago’s culture will be recognized during the event. Among them are Son players Tiburon Morales and Candido Fabre, composers Rodulfo Vaillant and Enrique Bonne, the Esteban Salas Music Conservatory and the Siboney Recording Studio and the city of Santiago de Cuba, as cradle of Son.
