CIENFUEGOS, Cuba, (acn) The World’s Longest Son (traditional Cuban musical style) arrived in the central Cuban province of Cienfuegos, the cradle of Cuba’s greatest ‘sonero’, Benny More, and guitar player and singer of the National Septet Ignacio Piñeiro, Rafael Ortiz.

The traditional local band Los Naranjos, which after 85 years continues promoting this rhythm born in the eastern region of Cuba by the end of the 19th century, will be in charge of prolonging the longest Son in the world.

A total of 15 bands, including Kfe Mezclado, the Septet Union, and the Charanga Cienfueguera, along with the children’s band Los Aragoncitos will perform for 24 hours for the public.

The Son is a rhythm influenced by the Bantu Spanish music, and became popular in Latin American countries such as Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

The longest Son in the world will conclude in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, as part of the activities on the occasion of the 15th International Cubadisco Fair 2011, later this month.

Many researchers affirm that Cuban traditional music experienced a revival in 1997 with a Son that lasted about 100 hours, which set a previous record.
