Havana, Cuba.- Cuba and led the performance of Latin American and Caribbean athletes during the opening meeting of the 2011 Diamond League of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that took place on Friday, May 6, in Doha, Qatar, with two bronze medals for each country.

The Cuban medals were for Alexis Copello, in men’s Triple Jump, and for Lazaro Borges, who won an unprecedented bronze in the men’s Pole Vault.

Copello registered 17.05 meters and thus placed behind French Teddy Tamgho, who produced the year’s world-leading mark with 17.49, and Bahamian Leevan Sands (17.09).

For his part, Borges surprised with his 5.60 meters in the pole vault event, which was dominated by German Malte Mohr (5.81) and Ukrainian Maksym Mazuryk (5.70).

The Jamaican bronze medals were for Patricia Hall in the women’s 200-meter sprint and in 400 meters.

The other medal won by a Latin American athlete was for Brazilian Maurren Maggi in the women’s Long Jump.(ACN)
