2011.05.04 - 21:57:59 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. FAO Expresses its Concern in Cuba on World’s Rising Food Prices. Havana, Cuba.- As said by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Cuba, food prices have climbed up 37% from December 2010, until March 2011.

A FAO representative to Cuba, Marcio Porto, affirmed on Wednesday in the International Seminar on Plant and Livestock Health (SISA 2011) that food prices will continue rising during the year, even though the value of some products like sugar have fell down.

Porto noted at Havana’s Convention Center that FAO biggest concern is the increase of world population in the years to come, and the lack of food for consumption.

At present, there are 29 countries in food crisis, caused by the scarce access to food, local serious problems, and the high costs of fuels, among other factors.

Porto pointed out that there are other nations with unfavorable forecasts for 2012, as a result of draughts, diseases, floods, pests, and natural disasters.

During the event; which winds up on Friday with the attendance of representatives from more than 30 nations from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America; the participants will also deal with topics such as health food and the production of drugs and vaccines with cutting-edge technologies.(ACN)
