Cienfuegos rewards cultural heritage preservation and restoration


By: Mireya Cabrera. The provincial Preservation and Restoration Awards were conferred to the Punta Gorda Area and the Maternity Palace. Both prizes were delivered during the Culture Week, presently underway in this city of Cuban Archipelago South-Center.

Zenia Jauregui, directress of the Office of Monuments and Historical Sites, explained that Punta Gorda Area stretches from Prado Drive and Campos St. to the roundabout across Jagua Hotel. The above-mentioned office is attached to the local Cultural Heritage Center. 

Jagua Hotel is an important architectural and urban development that has preserved its original structure. The hotel is attached to a few existing facilities, including Cienfuegos Club House, the Green House and the Blue Palace. They have all been nominated in the past and won prizes and mentions in their respective categories. 

The Provincial Restoration Award was conferred to the Maternity Palace, a XX century building that always housed health care services. Its facade and interiors were recently renovated, preserving the original values of the former Arango Policlinic. Located in Area 1, it used to be the headquarters of the health care department.
