'U.S. used 9/11 as an excuse for Middle East crusade'

There was no immediate official reaction from Havana to Osama bin Laden's death, but a news update in Cubadebate Monday morning included the following comments:

"A military operation is not an act of justice. It's an act of war," said the article, alluding to a statement by Tony Blair, in which the former British prime minister described Bin Laden's death as an "act of justice."

"On many occasions, not related to war or terrorism, we run into calls to justice that are really calls to vengeance. They are two different concepts that intertwine with unfortunate ease," continues the article, bylined by Iñigo Sáenz de Ugarte, who is not further identified.

"What is really lamentable is not that Bin Laden met the fate he sought but that thousands of people died because of his criminal ideas. Or that thousands of people also died when the United States decided to take advantage of Sept. 11 to engage in a crusade with which it might assure its hegemony in the Middle East."
