Fidel Castro was granted on Friday the Olive of Peace by the World Peace Council , for being a constant example in the struggle for the peaceful coexistence of nations.

Cuban Parliament President Ricardo Alarcon received the Olive of Peace given to Fidel during the first day of the meeting of the organization’s Executive Committee, which winds up on Saturday, attended by representatives from 40 nations.

The Olive of Peace consists in a wood sculpture representing the globe with olive branches representing peace on top, by Greek artist Kosta Rotos.

Likewise, the Brazilian Center for Solidarity with the Peoples and the Struggle for Peace gave Fidel a painting by Ediria Amazonas, which reflects the struggle and historic demands of workers from around the world.

Also acknowledged for their struggle against terrorism and for the preservation of peace were Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez, Heroes of the Republic of Cuba, incarcerated in the United States since 1998 for warning about violent acts against their people.

While addressing participants in the meeting, Alarcon denounced that confessed assassin Luis Posada Carriles enjoys Washington’s official protection, and that from US territory he announces future crimes with absolute impunity.

He stressed that, for trying to prevent such attacks, The Five were given harsh punishment and are serving long, cruel sentences, in the face of the indolence of the US legal system and the silence of the mainstream media.

Maria del Socorro, president of the World Peace Council, underlined that in the battle to defend world harmony and justice, they will never let up in their efforts to achieve the release of The Five, so the incarcerated Cuban antiterrorists return to their homeland soon.

She also pointed out that participants in the meeting will march at Havana’s Revolution Square on May 1st, International Workers’ Day.

Also participating in the meeting are relatives of The Five and leaders and members of solidarity-with-Cuba organizations, among others.
