The event is an initiative of the Society for the Study and Conservation of Caribbean Birds first held in 2003 in Cuba. The Festival takes place every year starting April 22 (World Day of the Earth) through May 22 (International Biodiversity Day).

There are currently 28 registered endemic species in Cuba. These include the trogon, the toti, the green woodpecker, and the humming bird.(ACN)
