2011.04.26 - 14:59:19 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, Cuba.- The 18th edition of the Romerias de Mayo (May festivities), the most important event of young creators in Cuba, will be held from May 2nd through the 8th in this city, with the presence of 300 artists from around the world.

Alexis Triana, president of the event’s Organizing Committee, told ACN that, among, participants, there will be representatives from Argentina, Venezuela, Bolivia, Australia, South Africa, China and Russia, in addition to members of the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) of the whole nation.

The largest delegations, he announced, will be those coming from Mexico and Canada, countries with which there have been cultural exchanges for several years now.

National Literature Award winner Daniel Chavarria and filmmakers Rogelio Paris and Rigoberto Lopez will be among personalities present in the meeting.

This edition, pointed out Triana, will include, for the fist time, a meeting of Cuban blog owners, with lectures by journalists like Enrique Ubieta and Arleen Rodriguez, and others who, from social networks, defend the truth about Cuba.

Karina Pardo, vice-president of the AHS in this province, underlined that the event Memoria Viva (Living Memory), a meeting aimed at awarding sociocultural research works, will be attended by university professor Jesus Guanche, president of the Jury that will analyze 35 works from almost all of the island’s provinces.

The Romerias de Mayo are held annually, and have their origin in a religious celebration established on May 3, 1790, by friar Antonio Alegre, who climbed the Bayado Hill with a wooden cross on his shoulders.

Writers, painters, musicians, researchers and representatives of other artistic expressions, revived this tradition in 1994 and since then it has become an opportunity to hold exchanges and debates, against the hegemony capitalist market art tries to impose.(ACN)
