The Buena Vista Social Club is a familiar name to many, since it’s the name of a Havana members club, an album and an award-winning documentary. It’s also an umbrella term for Cuba’s musical golden age of the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. Although many of the recognizable musicians from the era’s heyday have passed away, Juan de Marcos González and the Afro-Cuban All Stars  are keeping Cuba’s sound in the limelight.

The project was the brainchild of de Marcos González who, after his work with the Buena Vista Social Club, assembled a group of Cuban musicians from the Americas and Europe. Percussionist Calixto Oviedo sits in as one of the Afro-Cuban All Stars and has previously backed big names such as James Brown and Sting. The group’s members were assembled not only for their stellar talent, but also for their energy. The positive vibe and behavior of the group promises to deliver a musical experience like one right out of Havana.

Whether it be the Buena Vista Social Club or the Afro-Cuban All Stars, de Marcos González says Cubans never change. The music influenced by the seven African and European cultures of Cuba will always go down with mojitos, pork and some chicharrónes.Blaisdell Concert Hall, 777 Ward Ave., Sat., 4/16, 7pm,[blaisdellcenter.com]
