16:25, April 13, 2011. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Tuesday praised Cuba for its efforts in training veterinarians from other countries.

Many professionals currently playing important roles or holding positions in veterinary medicine in countries around the world have studied on the island, OIE representative Leopoldo Stuardo Escobar said.

Escobar was speaking on the sidelines of the 7th International Congress on Veterinary Sciences held here from April 11 to 14. Over 200 delegates from Cuba and 30 other countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Nicaragua are participating.

He said that veterinarians trained in Cuba have a very high level of scientific knowledge, therefore, the OIE recommends them as ambassadors for the worldwide implementation of standards promoted by the OIE.

"Cuba is an example of the control of the diseases occurring in the region, and this is based on a permanent system of prevention and control involving the entire society," Escobar said.

During the session, delegates will also visit a veterinary school and conduct debates on conservation strategies for endangered species at zoos.

The OIE is the leading intergovernmental organization responsible for improving animal health worldwide. It was created by the International Agreement on January 25, 1924 and is recognized as a reference organization by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
