2011.04.11 - 11:46:36 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Int’l Underwater Photo Contest Begins in Cuba’s Isle of YouthNUEVA GERONA, Cuba.- Representatives from 14 nations are already at the Hotel Colony, in Cuba’s western Isle of Youth, to participate in the annual International Underwater Photo Contest (FOTOSUB 2011) that begins there on Monday.

On this occasion, twenty competitors from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Venezuela, Mexico, Germany, Canada, Russia, Italy, Serbia, England, Sweden, Spain and Cuba will compete for the Silver Jellyfish, the trophy granted to the winner of the event.

Like in previous years, the event will be divided into four categories: fishes (not including turtles, octopuses or squids); underwater seascape without models (underwater flora and fauna); macro and seascape with models allowing the use of color filters, lanterns and slave flash; and half-sea half-land photos.

Competitors will also be allowed to present one photo per category to the jury, according to the regulations of the Organizing Committee.

Francisco Alberto Sanchez Perez, vice-president of MERLIN —the entrepreneurial group for sea and nautical activities in the territory—, said the jury is made up of five personalities linked to the world of photography and scuba diving from Cuba, Italy, Spain and Argentina.

Mayra Garcia, a representative of the Cuban Tourism Ministry in the territory, said that the program of the contest includes two training or familiarization immersions and another two for the actual competition.

The jury will announce the winner on Thursday. Since 1982, Hotel Colony has been internationally recognized as a privileged site for underwater photo events.  (ACN)
