English.news.cn. 2011-04-10 14:06:15. HAVANA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Some 295,000 Cubans, or 6 percent of the whole employed population, currently are engaged in private businesses, the Ministry of Labor and Social Security said Saturday.

With a population of 11.2 million, Cuba has a workforce of nearly 5 million people.

Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security Jose Barreiro said the demand for private business licenses has been "high" and exceeded the government's initial estimates.

He added that there was a possibility of expanding the fields of private businesses in Cuba.

In October 2010, the Cuban government led by President Raul Castro authorized the practice of private businesses in 178 economic fields.

The decision was aimed at reducing excess staff and boosting productivity in bloated state-owned companies.
