2011.04.08 - 16:12:28 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. HAVANA, Cuba. - The Fourth International Earth Sciences Convention (Geociencias 2011) concludes on Friday in Havana with discussions on topics such as mining, oil, natural phenomena, and nickel extraction, among others.

Today’s program includes several lectures on regional and applied geophysics, as well as the closing ceremony of the Fourth Symposium on Mining and Metallurgy.

The scientific program of the event, which began on Monday at Havana’s Convention Center with the attendance of nearly 700 delegates from 20 nations, included workshops, book launchings, and congresses.

A presentation by expert Manuel Marrero, oil specialist with the Ministry of the Basic Industry (MINBAS), had a great impact on the participants.

Marrero referred to Cuba’s potential in oilfields for prospecting and extracting fossil fuel in its platform in the Gulf of Mexico, and noted that the drilling of five new oil wells in this area will begin soon.

A lecture by the deputy minister of MINBAS, Ivan Martinez, who gave an overview on mining resources in Cuba and on short-term projections taking into account the current economic situation, was also very well received.(ACN)
