2011.04.07 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Population and Housing Census will Help Economic Planning on the island. Havana, Cuba. – The Cuban minister of Foreign Trade and Investment, Rodrigo Malmierca, said on Wednesday that a national population and housing census scheduled for 2012 will contribute to the betterment of the country’s economic planning in the coming years.

During the inauguration of the Tenth Meeting of the Executive Committee of the Conference of Statistics of the Americas (CEA) in Havana, Malmierca said the census will serve to know the potential of the productive forces and to design medium- and long-term development strategies.

The official added that some important data to be updated are the total of inhabitants, the incidence of aging, the rate of births reduction, the working-age population, and other demographic variables essential for an effective planning of the national economy.

The inaugural session of the CEA meeting —which belongs to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL)— was attended by ambassadors accredited to Havana and by representatives of member nations and associate states.

Pablo Tartuk, president of the Executive Committee of the CEA said that one of the main goals of the event is the creation of an action plan for the next two years in order to foster development in Latin America, taking into account the circumstances and realities of each country.

Also present in the inauguration of the meeting was CEPAL representative Luis Bacaria as well as the president of the Cuban Association of Economists and Accountants, Roberto Verrier, and the director of the National Statistics Office, Jose Castro Suarez. (ACN)
