According to the census, Cuba had 11 million 241,161 inhabitants as of Dec. 31, 2010, Granma reported Wednesday, citing figures from the National Statistics Office (ONE).

The previous census, in 2002, showed the population to be 11 million 177,743, according to the official website Cubadebate. An estimate by ONE last year showed that the population was 11,242,628 in 2009.

Seventy-five percent of Cubans – 8 million 465,730 – currently live in urban areas, 2 million 775,431 in rural areas. (Unfortunately, that imbalance does not meet "the need to develop even further the economic potentials of the rural areas," Granma says.)

As to distribution by gender, the figures are 5 million 612,165 women and 5 million 628,996 men.
