2011.04.04 - 21:24:12 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- Havana, the province most negatively affected by the present draught in Cuba, is making investments and adopting steps to lessen the effects of this phenomenon and to eliminate water leaks.

Specialists of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH) affirm that this is the highest water deficit in the Cuban capital in 50 years; and that’s why, four aqueduct companies are undertaking actions to counteract the current situation.

Aguas de la Havana (ALH), a company in charge of the water supply of seven municipalities (Centro Havana, Old Havana, Cerro, Plaza de la Revolucion, Diez de Octubre, Lisa and Marianao) with nearly 1.2 million inhabitants, is making efforts to eliminate all water leaks.

ALH manager Jose A. Yañez Balbuena told ACN that out of the 1,600 water leaks registered in the province; this company has been able to fix almost half of them.

Yanez mentioned that they have been able to do so thanks to the creation of new brigades and the help of the eastern Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba, the extension of the working hours, and the joint works with provincial and municipal technicians, as well as with Transit officers.

Another company called Aguas del Este is carrying out a great number of investments, which include construction works for taking water from the Jaruco dam to the La Coca dam, in the municipality of East Havana.

Deputy operations manager of ALH, Antonio Castillo, pointed out that they are taking forward a group of steps for saving water and for facing draughts like increasing control to identify big consumers and big spenders of water, whether private or governmental ones.

During the recently concluded 16th ordinary session of the Provincial Assembly of the People’s Power, delegates and city officials discussed on the steps undertaken in order to lessen the draught and palliate its effects in the population and the economy.(ACN)
