Friday, April 01, 2011. GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala — Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago battled to a 0-0 draw in a Caribbean derby at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship at the Cementos Progreso Stadium here on Wednesday night.

The result means that Group D leaders Mexico have advanced to the quarter-finals after they opened their account with a 3-0 win over Cuba on Monday night.

Cuba will now have to await the result of the Trinidad/Mexico match-up today to know their fate. For a chance to progress, Trinidad need a win, draw or a defeat by two goals or less, while Cuba will need Mexico to win by four goals to be assured of advancing.

Mexico, a powerhouse of CONCACAF, have joined defending champions Costa Rica and Canada from Group C into the final eight.

Costa Rica were assured of their spot with Wednesday night's 3-0 whipping of the French-speaking Caribbean island of Guadeloupe.

Canada, for their part, got three valuable points at the expense of the group's beating sticks on Monday, defeating the French Overseas Department, 2-1.

Canada and Costa Rica will tackle each other today for the final game of their preliminary campaign to decide group champions.

In the Cuba/Trinidad contest, which was the second match of a double-header, was marked in the main by the scarcity of goal-scoring opportunities.

In the curtain-raiser, Joel Campbell scored a quick-fire brace within six minutes in the second half to spearhead Costa Rica's win over Guadeloupe, formalising the elimination of the first Caribbean team from the 12-nation championship, which seeks to qualify four to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Colombia from July 29 to August 20.

Deyver Vega completed the rout when he found the mark in the 74th minute, and he could have had more but steered his injury-time penalty wide of the left post.

Jamaica, another Caribbean side struggling in these play-offs, were due to face Honduras last night in a do-or-die contest after their curtain-raising 0-2 defeat to hosts Guatemala in Group A at the Mateo Flores Stadium on Tuesday.
