CONCACAF.com. March 28, 2011. GUATEMALA CITY - Alan Pulido and Ulises Davila scored second-half goals and Mexico subdued Cuba 3-0 in the opening game for both Monday at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.

Cuba, which was making its first appearance in the CONCACAF U-20 finals since 2002, had an equal amount of possession to open the game, but neither side was able to generate much that was dangerous. Eventually Mexico was able to dominate, taking the lead in the 36th and adding insurance in the 53rd and 84th.

Mexico is looking for redemption after not winning a game at the 2009 championship, unable to make it out of its group and failing to qualify for the U-20 World Cup for the second time in three tries.

Both teams struggled to establish themselves in the first 15 minutes until Cuba's Yaudel Lahera tried a shot from distance in the 18th that bounced and Mexican keeper Carlos Lopez bobbled before recovering.

But Mexico began to assert more control, mostly with chances from distance by Saul Villabos and Davila.

It finally went ahead when Marvin Pinon's corner was headed on by Diego Reyes, struck Cuba's Renay Malblanche -- standing at the edge of the goal box -- in the right shoulder and deflected past Cuban keeper Odisnel Cooper.

While Mexico played without forward Erick Torres - who leads Chivas in scoring and remained with the Guadalajara club -- Cuba had managed to largely isolate Tecos midfielder Taufic Guarch until the second half.

Guarch, however, was instrumental in the second goal, finding space on the right side. Pinon's cross was headed on by Pulido and settled by Guarch, whose right-footed effort forced a diving block by Cooper.

But the ball bounded back in front and Pulido raced into to toe it into an open net.

Mexico continued to dominate and Davila scored his goal after Diego de Buen played a short corner to Jorge Mora, who immediately returned it. De Buen sent a right-footed cross to the back post, where Davila outlept Alexis Loera to head past Cooper.

The result matched the two teams' last meeting in the CONCACAF finals in 2002, when Mexico won the opening game for both 2-0. Cuba will play again Wednesday against Trinidad & Tobago while Mexico will finish its Group D play against the Young Warriors on Friday.
