Holguin to Tribute El Guayabero at Times of his Death Anniversary. By Lydia Esther Ochoa / radioangulo.Saturday, 26 March 2011. Faustino Oramas, El Guayabero, is one of the cultural icons of Holguin. A pilgrimage this Sunday to the downtown cemetery where the remains of the famous singer and composer Faustino Oramas, nicknamed El Guayabero, were buried, will be one of the activities to honor the man that made several generations enjoy the cunning lyrics of his songs.

At times of the fourth anniversary of his death, wreaths will be placed at his tomb, while the Provincial Concert Band will lead the pilgrimage to set off from the La Periquera museum of history - National Monument, the institution that harbored his funeral in March 27, 2007.

The homage organized by the Music Center of Holguin Province, named after him, has also scheduled a concert in front of the La Periquera by the Los Guayaberos, the grouping that accompanied Faustino Oramas in and out of Cuba.

On the other hand, the Provincial Concert Band of Holguin, will recall the “King of Cunning Lyrics” in its Sunday open-air concert at the Calixto Garcia park.

The Band will play versions of musical pieces by Faustino Oramas, among them the popular ones “En Guayabero” and “Como baila Marietta."

This homage is a prelude of the event to take place in the province next June 4, day of the centennial of Faustino Oramas’ birthday, who was born in 1911, when Holguin was a smaller city that is originally homed between the rivers Jigue and Maranon that cross the city from north to the south.
