By Shelia M. Poole. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, will arrive in Cuba on Monday at the invitation of the Cuban government.

This is their second trip to the Caribbean nation. The three-day  trip is a private undertaking under the auspices of the Atlanta-based Carter Center.

The Carters will meet with President Raul Castro and others to discuss new economic policies and the upcoming Party Congress as well as ways to improve relations between the two countries.

The Carters visited Cuba in May 2002. The U.S. has not had formal relations with Havana for decades.

In January,  Washington eased travel restrictions to Cuba,  allowed more airports to serve the nation with chartered flights and relaxed regulations on Americans sending money to Cuba.
