2011.03.24 / radiorebelde.Cuban Tae Kwon Do Athletes Train in PeruHAVANA, CUBA.- Dainellys Montejo is heading the Cuban team now training in Peru for the continental tae kwon do qualifying competition, to be held in Lima on March 25 and 26.

Montejo, Olympic bronze medallist in the 49-kilogram category in Beijing 2008 and one of the island’s hopes to obtain a ticket for the Pan-American Games slated for Guadalajara, Mexico, recently won the National Championship of this sports discipline, thus consolidating as the best athlete in her division in the country.

Also training in Peru are fellow team athletes Nidia Muñoz (57 Kg.), Taimi Castellanos – world runner-up in the 67-kilogram category in Copenhagen 2009- and Glennys Hernandez (over 67 Kg.) –all of them directed by experienced trainer Ramon Arias.

The men’s squad is led by Robelis Despaigne, champion of the University Games (over 80 Kg.) in Vigo 2010. Accompanying him are Frank Ismel Diaz (58 Kg.), bronze medallist in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Yosbel Perez (68) and Mario Juan Tellez (80), directed by Roberto Abreu.

In Rio de Janeiro 2007, Cuba won five medals (2-0-3), being Angel Valodia Matos (80 Kg.) and Gerardo Ortiz (over 80 Kg.) the champions, while Yaimara Rosario (57 Kg.), Mirna Echevarria (over 67 Kg.) and Ismel ended third.So far, more than 250 competitors from 25 nations have confirmed their presence in the Peruvian event.(ACN)
