2011.03.22 - 20:11:16 / radiorebelde.Washington Denies Permit for US Badminton Players to Travel to Cuba. Havana, Cuba.- The United States will not take part in the 12th Havana’s International Badminton Tournament as Washington refused to allow American players to travel to Cuba for the event, national badminton commissioner Miguel Diaz, announced Tuesday in Havana.

The American government’s stance responds to the economic, financial and commercial blockade established by that country against Cuba for nearly 50 years.

This is not the first time sports exchange between the two countries is hindered by the US policy against Cuba. Every year fewer Americans are able to participate in Cuban sports events.

Diaz said more than 80 badminton players from Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic, Suriname  and Cuba have confirmed their participation in the tournament to take place at the Kid Chocolate sports center from March 25 to 27.

The tournament will distribute 1,700 ranking points among winners of the Single (men and women), Double (m and w) and Mixed events.

The commissioner assured that the contest will be tough for locals faced with the upcoming Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011.(ACN)
