2011.03.22 / radiorebelde. Santa Clara, Cuba.- The 40% increase of forest areas in the Hanabanilla basin shows the positive environmental actions taken over the past five years in the region, experts said this Tuesday.

The increase of the surface covered by trees in the area around the only natural reservoir amid mountains, in the Guamuhaya massif, of Cuba, helps protect the water in the reservoir, Juana Cortes, Cienfuegos’ Water Resources Office, told ACN.

In a workshop about environmental evolution of Hanabanilla, Cortes made reference to other soil preservation and improvement measures in an area of 625 acres planted with coffee and other crops.

Cortes added that reforestation increases raining possibilities and contributes to improve the situation of underground currents, while investments on the technology of the reservoir increase the quality of operations for the water supply to the provinces of Cienfuegos and Villa Clara.

Mileidys Sosa, with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment said the protection of the basins also leads to an improvement on the quality of water.

The workshop was held as part of a program marking the World Water Day established in 1993 by the United Nations.(ACN)
