Unión Nacional Eléctrica is investing in the purchase of several electrical substations, the AIN news agency reported.

The report didn’t say where the state utility is buying the equipment. In an agreement signed two years ago, Russia agreed to provide loans for the purchase of electrical equipment.

The program, designed to reduce blackouts and brownouts as part of Cuba’s “Energy Revolution,” is under the direction of the Basic Industries Ministry.

A new substation to be opened soon in Havana near Ciudad Escolar Libertad will supply the hospital in Marianao and numerous luxury hotels in the Monte Barreto area, a utility official said, according to AIN. The substation includes high tech equipment that allows UNE to identify, and react to, disruptions in a short time.

Other substations planned for this year include one in Boyeros in suburban Havana, two 110-kv facilities in rural Ciego de Ávila province “in support of the future development of agriculture,” and one each in the cities of Holguín and Nipe, in Holguín province.
