Among the most important areas is the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery where the remains of two important independence leader, Father of the Homeland, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, and Cuba´s National Hero Jose Marti lay to rest. 2011.03.21 / radiorebelde.Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.- The specialized institutions, government and other entities in the province of Santiago de Cuba are carrying out preservation works of its historic sites related to the stage of the Cuban struggle against Spanish colonialism.

According to Sierramaestra website, there are currently 47 sites declared National and 44 local monuments. Among the most important areas is the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery where the remains of two important independence leader, Father of the Homeland, Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, and Cuba´s National Hero Jose Marti lay to rest. Both fell in combat fighting Spanish colonialism.

The remains of Perucho Figueredo, author of the Cuban National Anthem is also found in the historic cemetery, in addition to 39 rebels that attacked the Moncada Garrison and dozens of others that fell during the underground and rebel struggle against the Batista dictatorship and those that gave their lives in honor of international missions in African nations which alongside their brothers and sisters fought against apartheid.

Among the other historic institutions is the Moncada Garrison, turned into the July 26th School City after the triumph of the Revolution where Fidel Castro and over a dozen young revolutionaries began the last stage of the struggle for the definitive independence of Cuba.

The province also has many sites where the remains of those that fell in combat during the rebel struggle in the II Frank Pais Eastern Front headed by President Raul Castro and the III Mario Muñoz Front presided by the late Commander of the Revolution, Juan Almeida Bosque are found.

The City´s Conservation Office dedicates over 4 million pesos each year for restoration and conservation projects of the historic places guided by the Heritage Office of the eastern province.

There is also a relationship with the communities where these historic sites are located and work in favor of its care, preservation and extension to new generations of their historic values. The Education Ministry is also involved through the schools in the province.

Preserve our history and transmit it to the present and future generations is a priority for the Cuban Revolution. (ACN)
