According to Dr Ercilio Vento, historian of Matanzas City, no less than 250 pieces will be exhibited in the first stage.

They will prove the existence of diseases like pre-Columbian syphilis, tumors and other ailments that Cuban aborigines suffered.

The site chosen for this unique exhibition is the “El Morrillo” Museum, located in the southern bank of Canimar River. It is close to the most remarkable opencast aboriginal cemetery in the island, reportedly 7 000 years old, where over 200 skeletons have been found.

The idea of establishing the Paleontopathology Museum is pursuant to the development and investigative success of this field. This university department advocates an interesting approach to the assessment and interpretation of diseases that Cuban aborigines suffered, based in their osseous remains.

The latest investigations of this scientific institution revealed the feeding and diseases that they suffered. Furthermore, they ascertained, by means of rigorous studies, the prevalence of degenerative diseases passed on through family inheritance during several generations.

The Canimar River natural landscape was conferred the category of National Monument last year, on the grounds of outstanding wildlife preservation and other undisputable contributions. Evidences of aboriginal settlements and XIX century coffee plantations have been found in this region. There also caves and caverns with aboriginal burials that have remarkable funeral positions.

This initiative is part of an ambitious project to establish a reference center for research works on the earliest residents of the Island. The archeological site also offers educational and tourism benefits that cannot be overlooked. Its more than 19 km² of extension are still largely unexplored. By: Jose Miguel Solis .
