By Associated Press, Thursday, March 17. EL PASO, Texas — A New York Times reporter who interviewed an ex-CIA agent about planning 1997 bombings in Cuba is retaking the stand in his U.S. perjury trial.
Ann Louise Bardach interviewed Luis Posada Carriles in 1998, and got him to admit masterminding bombings he said were meant to hurt Cuban tourism. One man was killed, although Posada says that wasn’t the intent.
Bardach has spent more than five hours testifying. Her testimony resumes Tuesday.
Bardach fought subpoenas compelling her court appearance, saying journalists shouldn’t have to testify against sources. Prosecutors need Bardach to link Posada to the bombings.
The 83-year-old anti-communist militant is ex-Cuban President Fidel Castro’s nemesis.
He is charged with lying about planning the bombings during citizenship hearings in Texas, after sneaking into the U.S. in 2005.
