2011.03.14 - 17:16:51 / radiorebelde.MATANZAS, Cuba. - The XXX international Manuel Suarez in Memoriam Weightlifting tournament begins today in the western Cuban city of Cardenas, located 130 kilometers east of Havana city.

The tournament’s main attractions are Cuban Sergio Alvarez and Argentinean Malvina Veron. Alvarez, winner of several medals at world level and national record holder in clean and jerk in the 56 kilogram division (157 kgs) will try to earn a position in the national squad for coming events.

Meanwhile, this will be the first international appearance of Veron, current South American champion and bronze medallist in the 2009 youth world championship (53 kilogram), after giving birth to a child, according to her trainer Jorge Burtovoy.

Veron will have to face hosts Sayli de la Caridad and Raquel Mora.

Burtovoy said the Argentinean squad came to Cuba to work on some technical details before the Guadalajara Pan American Games, to be held next October. It also includes Hugo Catalan (69 kg), Pan American medal winner and 2009 Rio de Janeiro champ.

Today, Cuban world medallists Yasmani Romero and Carlos Hernandez will compete also in the 56 kg division.(ACN)
