Where he vacationed in Cuba, I don't know, but Varadero is where we go each year. No beggars, and the citizens are friendly.

Cubans are a very family-and friend-oriented society. Perhaps Precht misread the closeness of hugs and cheek-to-cheek greetings of the Cuban people as begging, I don't know.

I don't get his "farming" concept. The friends we have made in Cuba take us into their homes in the countryside, away from the resorts. That is what Cuba is about.

Had the writer done some research before going to a resort under construction, he might have enjoyed his trip more. But to portray all Cubans negatively is just wrong.

The only thing I agree with Precht is that the Quebec students were the most ignorant and disruptive of all the spring break vacationers there. We will continue to go back each year to see our Cuban friends and meet new ones.Guy S. Tozer. Saskatoon. The StarPhoenix
