March 11th, 2011. By Shannon Noelle. Last month the Obama Administration announced a plan to ease the United States’ travel policy with Cuba. Students and church groups are now being permitted to visit the Caribbean country. The money restriction has also been increased allowing Americans to send as much as $500 dollars every three weeks to Cuban friends and family (who are not part of the Communist party or Castro administration).

Only three airports in the United States held chartered flights to Cuba, this week eight more airports were added. Customs and Border Protection officials are saying that charter flights to Cuba can now be scheduled from Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Atlanta, Puerto Rico and airports in Baltimore, along with the previous three, NYC, Miami and Los Angeles.

The leader of the moderate Cuban-American National Foundation, Pepe Hernandez, praises the recent changes,

“It’s going to help the interaction between regular Cubans and U.S. citizens."

This is hopefully great news for both the U.S. and Cuba, with all intentions of strengthening our relationship with the country and raising awareness of what needs to change in the future.
