2011.03.07/ radiorebelde.Cuba Finished Second in Pan American Cup of JudoHAVANA, CUBA.- Cuba placed second at the Pan American Judo Cup that concluded on Saturday in Guayaquil, Ecuador, with five crowns, three silver and five bronze medals.

The tournament was dominated by Cuba’s main rival in the region: Brazil, whose judokas accumulated seven titles, three silver and two bronze medals.

The Brazilians won the men’s competition (4-1-1) followed by the Cubans (2-1-4), while both teams had the same result in the women’s contest (3-2-1).

The Cuban gold medalists were Dayaris Mestre (women’s 48 kg), Yalennis Castillo (women’s 78 kg), Idalis Ortiz (women’s +78 kg), Asley Gonzalez (men’s 90 kg) and Oreidis Despaigne (men’s 100 kg).

A total of 170 judokas from 22 countries participated in the tournament, which granted classification points for the upcoming Pan American Games of Guadalajara, Mexico, in October 2011.

Guadalajara will also host the Pan American Championships on April 1-2.(ACN)
