The eastern Cuban province of Granma might become a major rice producer in the country, considering that rice is indispensable in Cubans'' diet.

Juan Alberto Guzman, director of the Fernando Echenique cooperative, said that in 2011, Granma must produce 62,000 tons of rice, 20,000 tons more than in 2010.

He added that there is enough water for irrigation and supplies of machinery, herbicides, fertilizers and fuel are guaranteed.

Cuba is boosting rice production to reduce imports, as nearly 800,000 tons of rice are consumed every year.

According to the National Statistics Office, 320,000 tons of rice were produced in Cuba in 2010.
