Argentine scientist and writer Alberto Granado Romero, whose travels with Ernesto Che Guevara through South America were documented in the book and film "The Motorcycle Diaries," died in his sleep Saturday in Havana. He was 88.

In December 1951, Granado, then 30, joined Guevara on a nine-month journey up the western coast of South America aboard Granado's motorcycle, "La Poderosa." At the end of their trip, in Venezuela, Guevara returned to Argentina and Granado remained in Caracas.

Granado settled in Havana in March 1961, where he did research on genetics until his retirement in 1994.

The 2004 film "The Motorcycle Diaries" featured actor Rodrigo de la Serna as Granado and Gael García Bernal as Guevara. It won several international awards. (PHOTO SHOWS Granado on a motorcycle during the filming, between De la Serna, left, and Bernal.)

Per his wishes, his ashes will be scattered in Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba, a Cuban TV newscaster said.
