HAVANA, Cuba, March 4 (acn) The Cuban national roller-skating team departed on Friday to Argentina to participate in a qualifying regional tournament for the Pan-American Games of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Tony Garcia, bronze medalist at the Central American Games in Cartagena de Indias 2006, is the leader of the Cuban team to the tournament, which will begin on March 5 and will end on March 13.

Elianny Gutierrez, Laura Geroy and Gerardo Torres, under the guidance of coach Yuri Rodriguez, will also compete in event. Jessica Gonzalez, Leyda Diaz and Daniel Curbelo, coached by David Mesa, will participate in the artistic category.

The national roller-skating commissioner, Israel Ramos, told ACN that the top nine finishers in the tournament will assure their respective countries’ participation in the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara.

Ramos said that in the previous tournament, in Mar del Plata, in 2005, Cuba placed seventh, behind Colombia, the United States, Chile, Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico, the main powers in the region.

Ecuador —winner of medals in the most recent World Championships of the sport—, El Salvador, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Panama, will also compete for tickets to the Pan-American Games.
