2011.03.02 - 13:11:47 / radiorebelde.Canadian and Cuban Farmer Commend Ecological Agriculture. Havana, Cuba.- Experienced Canadian and Cuban farmers defended environmentally-friendly agricultural practices in a meeting for the exchange of experiences in Bayamo, capital city of the province of Granma.

After visiting agricultural areas in the region, Canadian Ron Berezan, coordinator of the Urban Farmer organization of his country, told ACN Cuban urban and sub-urban farming projects are a good example to the world faced with crisis brought about by unsustainable economic, social and environmental systems. Berezan is the leader of more than ten Canadians who arrived in Cuba February 21 and will stay in the island until March 7.

As part of Tuesday’s tour of farming areas, the Canadians talked with workers at the Plaza de la Patria organic garden, which is one of the efficient ones in the province. The organic vegetable garden produced 23 Kg of vegetables in 2010 without using chemicals, and employing the technique of mixing crops.

Fernando Funes, coordinator of the program of ecological agriculture of the Cuban Association of Farming and Forest Technicians, said the exchange of experiences with Canadian colleagues has been very useful for both parties. He said more than one hundred Canadians have already participated in this type of encounters.(ACN)
