League of Women Voters Host Speaker Thursday.Have you thought much about Cuba lately? Maybe you heard that sugar will no longer be subsidized in that country. But how much do you know about our close neighbor to the south?

The League of Women Voters and the American Association of University Women are joining forces to bring Dr. Alberto Coll to Lake Forest at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Senior Center, 100 E. Old Mill Road.

Coll, a professor of International Law at DePaul University Law School, will discuss the relationship between Cuba and the United States, addressing the central question: Will they ever be friends?

Born in Cuba, Coll came to the United States at the age of 13, knowing no English. He went on to graduate cum laude from Princeton University and earned his post-graduate degrees in government and foreign affairs from University of Virginia.

Before joining DePaul, Coll taught at Georgetown University and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Naval War College. From 1990-93, he served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and earned the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. He is the author of The Wisdom of Statecraft as well as many articles in international law journals and Foreign Policy magazine.
