2011.02.28 - 16:21:07 / radiorebelde.Ciego de Avila, Cuba.- Last year, the central Cuban province of Ciego de Avila protected about 3,400 hectares of different crops by using 8,000 tons of humus produced by cooperatives and farmers.

In 2010, 605 farms joined the production of humus, in which nearly 230,000 tons of bovine, equine, and ovine manure were used.

Farm workers experiences accounted for a quick assimilation of organic fertilizers, which contributed to saving chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides.

Specialist Roberto Salas Romero highlighted the commendable work carried out by more than 200 promoters of organic fertilizers in the province.

According to agricultural delegate Benito Migoya Diaz this movement had a great influence in the production of more than 300,000 tons of agricultural products in 2010; although the goals for the present year in the territory are higher.      

Private producer Ariel Gonzalez, who harvested 203 tons of papaya and 3,15 tons of black beans and achieved two national records, pays close attention to the scientific work on the field.    

Agricultural and livestock cooperatives like Roberto Carvajal and Anibal Madrigal, in Florencia; Orlando Gonzalez, in Majagua; El Vaquerito, in Moron; and Jose Marti, in Ciego de Avila; stand out among the rest in the use and production of humus.(ACN)
