The closure of the Spanish shortwave broadcasting came as part of budget cuts at BBC’s World Service which will include the end of BBC Caribbean transmissions next month.

The Current Affairs Editor for the Spanish American Service, BBC Mundo, Hernando Alvarez, said the transmission was important as a point of contact to the outside world.

“Obviously, things with the internet have changed a bit. There’s some control but also people will find a way to get informed.

“But I think it was just a window to the outside world that is not going to be there anymore,” he said.
