Havana, Cuba.- Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and Security of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, declared himself to be pleased with his  visit to Cuba, for which he said he has special admiration.

After being welcomed at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport by Deputy Foreign Minister Marcos Rodriguez, the visitor also said he has great affection for Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.

When asked by the Cuban press, Xanana Gusmão, 65, recalled that in February, 2003, he met with Fidel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the occasion of the Summit of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries.

This is the first time that the head of the state of East Timor visits the island, with which his country established official relations on May 20, 2002 -the same day that nation restored its independence.

During his stay in Havana, the ex guerilla leader during the pro-independence struggle of East Timor will meet with authorities and visit places of interest, as part of his work schedule.

Health, education, energy, agriculture and mining are the sectors in which Cuba is currently cooperating with that small nation of 24,000 square kilometers and a little over one million inhabitants.

Since Cuba’s medical aid to that country began in 2004, 712 physicians and health technicians have offered their services in East Timor.

At present, there are 225 youngsters from East Timor studying in the Caribbean island, 202 of them to become physicians.ACN
