2011.02.23 - 17:51:19 / radiorebelde. Cuban Woman Nominee to Receive Mujer Habano Distinction. Pinar Del Rio, Cuba.- The veguera Maria Luisa Alvarez, one of the most notable tobacco farmers in Cuba, was nominated to receive the Mujer Habano distinction, presented by Habanos S.A. for the first time, this year.

Specialists from that joint venture confirmed the announcement during a tour given through the westernmost province of Pinar del Rio to the participants in the 13 th International Habano Festival, which runs from Monday through Friday in Havana.

Maria Luisa grows sun tobacco (grown in uncovered areas), and produces 44500 pounds of leaves per every 13.4 hectares, in the vega Monterrey del Cafetal, in the municipality of San Juan y Martinez ––which is called the Tobacco Mecca in Cuba for the quality of the tobacco leaves grown there.

She told the press that working keeps her busy and happy because working in the fields is a wonderful way of living.

With the help of specialist Juan Manuel Llanes, she promotes the agricultural preservation in her farm, emphasizing on the use of the proper farming techniques not to exhaust natural resources.

Up to the present day, five producers in the province have been presented the Hombre Habano distinction, including the late legendary Alejandro Robaina and the 39 years old Hector Luis Prieto, the youngest veguero in the world with such distinction.

Digital sources point out that Habanos S.A. annually awards, since 1995, the most outstanding producers, traders and universal promoters of the sector.

Distinctions and awards are presented during the annual festivals, which count with the attendance of hundreds of lovers of Cuban cigars from the whole world.(ACN)
