Port-au-Prince, Feb 23 (Prensa Latina) Nearly 240,000 Haitians will benefit from the Cuban literacy method "Yo, si puedo" (Yes I Can), to be applied in this Caribbean country.

The program that teaches people how to read and write will be implemented in the western, southern, southeast and northern departments in a period of 22 months.

The first stage includes teaching about 120,000 people how to read and write this year, with 150 supervisors, 1,000 facilitators, 15 Cuban technicians, and teaching aids.

Teachers will give classes in over 9,000 schools created for that purpose in those territories.

Cuba and Haiti established an education agreement 10 years ago, and since then about 160,000 people have learned how to read and write in this nation.

The announcement coincides with the resumption of the school year in this country, devastated by an earthquake in January 2010 and affected by a cholera epidemic since November.
