HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 22 (acn) The Canadian ambassador to Cuba, Matthew Levin, affirmed on Monday, at the opening ceremony of the 10th National Seminar on Canadian Studies in Havana, that academic relations between Cuba and Canada are a priority for his country.

In the Main Hall of the University of Havana, Levin said that richness and complexity characterize such academic links, which are based on respect and have brought about mutual benefits in spite of political, social and cultural differences.

Representatives from 12 Cuban and six Canadian universities, as well as from several Cuban ministries and institutions are participating in the event.

The seminar, which runs from Monday through Thursday, February 24, has been organized by the University of Havana and Chairs of Studies on Canada, which amount to seven in Cuba.

In 2010, Canada continued to be Cuba’s main tourist market when a record 940,000 plus visitors from that North American country arrived in the Caribbean nation.

The vice-rector of the University of Havana, Cristina Diaz, PhD., and the director of the Group of Studies on Canada, Beatriz Diaz, attended the opening ceremony of the seminar.
