2011.02.19 / radiorebelde.UN Agency Supports Modernization of Cuban Agricultur. Havana, Cuba.- Farmers from several Cuban provinces are benefiting from the Local Support Program for the Modernization of the Agricultural Sector (PALMA), boosted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

In addition to training in economic, legal, social, environmental management and also in gender, producers in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Sancti Spiritus, Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantanamo receive support in terms of equipment and consumables, PALMA training coordinator Carlos Arteaga told ACN.

All this makes it possible to strengthen production and economic capacities for distribution and commercialization, underlined participants in the Workshop for the Training of Local Facilitators on Cooperativism, which ended on Friday in this capital at the Acuario Hotel of Havana’s Hemingway Marina.

PALMA was created in 1999, and since then the project is executed by the UNDP with international financing, the organization’s Web site reported.

Cuba imports most of the food it consumes, and has been seriously affected by the dramatic and continuous increase of their prices in the international market.

The Cuban government considers the food issue as one of national security and underlines the need of making the best use of resources and of increasing sustainable food production.(ACN)
