2011.02.19 - 13:44:06 /radiorebelde.Cuba and Haiti Strengthen Cultural Exchanges. Havana, Cuba.- Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue, Culture and Communications Minister of Haiti, expressed on Friday in this capital her satisfaction for the strengthening of cultural bonds between her country and Cuba.

She said that a lot of work needs to be done to found Haiti again –devastated by an earthquake in January, 2010-, an effort in which artistic creation and the safeguard of material and immaterial heritage, in addition to an increase in relations with the Caribbean, are essential.

During a press conference at Havana’s Casa de las Americas cultural institution, within the context of the Cuba 2011 International Book Fair, the minister thanked Cuba for its cooperation in several sectors, like that of health.

She emphasized that the most important public health work in Haiti is the one carried out by Cuban physicians, who have managed -due to their efficiency- to reduce mortality by cholera, in addition to stay in areas difficult of access, taking care of the earthquake victims.

We wouldn’t know what to do without these brigades. That’s the reason why our eternal gratitude goes to the Cuban and Latin American people, which, after the disaster, have continued to offer their help and solidarity, added Jocelyn Lassegue.

While speaking about the reality of the cultural sector in her country and future perspectives, she reflected on the importance of creating spaces for the promotion of various artistic expressions, taking into account the deterioration of many buildings and historic documents due to the earthquake.

She commented that, for the first time in that nation, culture has been included among its priorities, and reflected on its significance to boost national development.

With regard to the Fair, the minister reaffirmed the importance of the event, which makes feedback between readers and writers possible, in addition to allowing people to think about a better future.(ACN)
